so i realized today that i really like “the big come up” i think that album most effectively embodies who the black keys are. i still prefer “magic potion” and then “brothers” at the top, but their debut really sounds like them at their most pure.
i’d say the same thing about the white stripes. their debut and “de stijl” are probably the most authentic to the white stripes and jack white’s heroes like son house and led zeppelin. however, i still (in this case it’s more slight of a margin) prefer “elephant” and “white blood cells” and “icky thump” (get behind me satan not as much lol) to those initial efforts.
i find this interesting because it seems like the exact opposite happens in rap. i can listen to “illmatic” every day of the week but i don’t feel the same about “hip hop is dead” or “nigger” (both of which i actually bought, which is funny). for some reason rap careers don’t always age as well, we expect rappers to get better with time or at least remain consistently good. but in most cases the more work they get under their belt a great deal of them can never reach the pure ethos of their debut, or their experimentation falls somewhat awry. there are of course numerous exceptions and nas is probably more of an aberration than the norm, but i just think it’s interesting how that works.
